Smile It's Your Wedding Day

A wedding picture with a winning smile is something you can cherish forever.

Days are spent finding the perfect dress, the most picturesque venue and a delicious menu but you can forget about the appearance of your teeth.

Many of us have have chipped teeth, discolouration, gaps and unevenness in our smile.

There has been an increase in couples getting cosmetic dental procedures for their 'big day', according to Duncan Black the principal dentist at Halo Dental, Glasgow. Work can range from full 'smile design' cases where smiles are redesigned with crowns and veneers to tooth bleaching and cleaning for the bridal party.

"I have had several grooms in recent years visit me, with the plea, she says she will not marry me till I get my smile fixed," says the dentist.

Your Wedding Day is a day you will be looking forward to and have planned for a long time. You want to look your best, be able to smile happily for the photographs that you will have for years. You want to smile without being at all self conscious.

"So many people have said to me, after getting their smile fixed, I wish I had done this before my wedding," he continued.

The most popular procedure is tooth bleaching. This is a simple procedure where custom thin trays are made for you to wear with bleaching gel for a couple of hours a day for a week. This whitens your teeth.

"It is the easiest and quickest way to add that 'zing' to your smile," Duncan adds. "After bleaching, then veneers and crowns are the most popular. With these we can correct twisted, discoloured and heavily filled teeth, closing gaps and giving you the 'Wow' factor when you smile."

The amount of time in advance of your wedding in which you visit the dentist is dependent upon the procedure you are getting done.

"If you just need a bit of bleaching, and a polish then 3 months before the wedding is fine. If you think you need more involved work, then a minimum of a year before would be appropriate.

"I have had people come to see me with dreadful teeth and say I am getting married in a fortnight's time, what can you do? The answer is unfortunately, not very much," Dr Black said.

The principal dentist advises that you brush and floss your teeth every day. You should seek advice from a dentist well in advance, so that any desired treatments can be carried out well before your wedding day.

"There is so much we can do now cosmetically to give you the perfect smile that you have always wanted so there is no excuse for a bride and groom not having the smile they always dreamed of on their big day," he concluded.
