Charges Made Over 'Sham Marriage'

Three people who were arrested on suspicion of staging a sham wedding ceremony in Belfast have appeared in court recently charged with immigration offences.

Acting on intelligence, UK Border Force officers prevented a suspected sham wedding between a Slovakian woman and a Pakistan national from taking place at Belfast City Hall on 15 August.

The couple and their best man were taken to Musgrave Street police station in Belfast where they were interviewed and charged with attempting to evade UK immigration laws.

The groom, Kashif Ali a 22-year-old Pakistan national with an address in Glasgow appeared before Laganside Magistrates Court charged with seeking to obtain leave to remain in the UK by deception.

He was further charged with obtaining leave to remain by deception for obtaining a student visa for a college in London which it is alleged he failed to attend.

The bride, 22-year-old Veronika Dzurikovk who lives in Athlone Co Westmeath, and 39-year-old Asif Nasair from Glasgow also appeared at the same court, both charged with assisting unlawful immigration.

All three were remanded in custody.

A sham marriage typically occurs when a non-European national marries someone from the European Economic Area as a means of attempting to gain long-term residency and the right to work and claim benefits in this country.

Earl Aiken, Senior Criminal Investigator for the UK Border Agency said: "These arrests are the result of intensive investigations into suspected sham marriages across the whole of Northern Ireland by our team of specialist immigration officers.

"They reflect how seriously the UK Border Agency takes abuse of the immigration laws."

Anyone who has information about suspicious marriages or other forms of immigration abuse should contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where anonymity can be assured or visit the Crimestoppers website.
