Brits 'Not Afraid To Invest In Love'

When it comes to buying an engagement ring the majority of Brits believe you "can't put a price on love", a survey has revealed.

Research carried out by DiscountVouchers.co.uk showed that romance is alive and well in the UK with almost 40% saying they are more than happy to spend on an engagement ring.

The survey also showed that 11% believe that a betrothed couple should spend twice the man’s monthly salary on a ring, while 30% stated that they would be prepared to pay as much as £500 for an engagement ring.

When it comes to making a proper first impression, 75% of respondents stated that they would always pay out for a new outfit for a first date. The poll also showed that 65% are content to split a restaurant bill in half - while 67% say they wouldn't eat the most costly thing on the restaurant menu even if their favourite dish were on show.

When love is still new and fresh the survey showed that 57% of people got taken out by their new partner for a meal while 46% stated that they were given flowers. a total of 25% said that they had been given the gift of jewellery while almost 20% had been spoiled with a romantic weekend in a hotel or motel somewhere. However in contrast to this, just 5% confessed that they had been bought new lingerie by their new man.

When novelty has worn off almost 25% of people said they would be prepared to finish with a boyfriend or girlfriend if they considered the other half mean with money. However 37% said that stinginess was not a factor in love.

Relationships can still cost a lot of money it seems, as the survey showed that 42% of people are prepared to go overdrawn if it meant they could impress a new paramour. Men it seems are more romantic in money terms these days, with a big 94% saying their bride-to-be's family need not fund the entire wedding.

Doug Scott, managing director of DiscountVouchers.co.uk, commented: "Our latest research is interesting in that it really does demonstrate that Brits are still romantic to a fault. Dating and marriage haven't been expensive for a long time now but there are methods and means of making courting a better value for money nowadays."
