Shift In Lingerie Buying Habits Revealed

A major shift has occurred in lingerie gifting, as men are opted for purple over traditional red items, according to high street store Debenhams.

Sales of purple lingerie items are up 54% versus the same period last year, as men sway away from predictable red slinky numbers and opt for sophisticated lace and silk in hues of purple.

Debenhams' revelation comes as millions of men all over the UK bought wives and girlfriends lingerie.

Spokesperson for Debenhams Michelle Dowdall commented: "After being the automatic number one choice for the past five decades, red pants and bras have finally been replaced.

"Men are relying on purple underwear to work its magic this year."

Psychologists believe the sudden shift may be a reflection of rapidly changing economic and social values sweeping the country.

As well as being associated with lust, the colour red normally indicates an adventurous, outgoing spirit, brimming with optimism and a willingness to try anything.

Purple on the other hand is the colour of good judgement and spiritual fulfilment, the colour of choice for people who put security, meditation and a sense of self worth before risk taking and reckless moves.

The earth moving shift in the colour of sexy lingerie was discovered when Debenhams examined sales figures for the year and spoke to its team of in store lingerie advisors.

Continues Michelle Dowdall: "It's clear that the financial crisis is having a major impact in the bedroom as well as the Euro zone.

"Never before have we seen such a dramatic shift in the colour of bras and knickers women are receiving as gifts.

"Many women now want to feel secure, valued and protected – all of the attributes needed to cope well in a crisis – before they feel they can relax and enjoy themselves.

"Reckless red may have been a thrilling experience for many years, but those times have been replaced with passionate but purposeful purple."

Up until recently, they men invariably choose red, often with varying degrees of frills, satin and lace, hoping that they will represent a symbol of love for their partner.

So engrained is red underwear over the holidays that few men ever considered buying any other colour – until now.
