The former Oasis star, 44, told The Sun: "I was watching TV one Sunday night... Coast, I think, with that Scottish bloke with the hair.
"I remember there was this interesting item about a silted-up bit of the Humber River, and Sara came and stood in front of the screen and said, 'Just so you know, I'm not getting married when I'm 40.'
"I had to ask how old she was — 39. Then I said, 'So are you asking me to ask you to marry me?'"
The couple married last June at Lime Wood Hotel, in New Forest, Hampshire, just two months after getting engaged.
The Don't Look Back in Anger singer says Sara's parents approve. He told the newspaper: "I think they had enough faith to realise I wasn't Pete Doherty.
"If you meet me, I'm obviously not a d***head. I was once, and quite proud of it too, but, you know, they were smitten with me right away."
The couple met in an Ibiza nightclub in 2000, they have sons Donovan, four, and 16-month-old Sonny. Noel, also has a 12-year-old daughter Anais to ex-wife Meg Matthews,
