Sham Marriage Pair Caught After Removing Wedding Rings

A bride and groom, who took part in a sham marriage ceremony at a registry office in Sheffield Town Hall, were seen removing their wedding rings just moments after they were pronounced man and wife.

The pair, Marcela Tancosova and groom Choudry Kanwal, were caught by CCTV cameras, a court has heard.

Tanscosova, 35, was jailed for 12 months at Sheffield Crown Court, however her groom Kanwal jumped bail and has not been found.

The court heard how Tancosova agreed to take part after she was approached by Sajid Mehmood, who offered her money.

Mehmood was given a community order and told to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work.

He already served a 15-month jail sentence for fixing two other sham weddings.

Sentencing the pair, Judge Peter Kelson QC told Mehmood and Tancosova: "The evil behind these offences is the flouting of immigration laws and it has got to stop."
