Tongans are enjoying a traditional feast of cooked pigs to mark the event.

"It's a new beginning for the royal household. We are looking to preserve the constitutional monarchy," the crown prince's uncle Lord Vaea told New Zealand TV.

Marriage between cousins is seen as a way of keeping the royal bloodline strong in Tonga.

King George Tupou V died in March.
