•the average age of brides and grooms continues to increase. Last year the average groom was nearly 34 years old and the average bride nearly 32; both five years older than their counterparts two decades ago.

•Saturday 27 August 2011 was the most popular day to get married last year, with just over 100 couples getting married on that date.

•the number of divorces peaked in 2007 when 2,900 were recorded. Last year the number of divorces recorded (2,300) was around the average level for the last two decades (1991-2010 average of 2,400 divorces annually), and last year there were 89 same-sex civil partnerships registered.

Dr David Marshall from NISRA said: "The popularity of civil marriage continues to increase – forty years ago one marriage in every twelve was by civil ceremony, today this stands at one marriage in every three. This reflects the changes in society over this period."
