These include The Lilac Bus, Tara Road and Circle of Friends, which were adapted for film.
Born in Dalkey, Co Dublin, Maeve trained as a teacher before moving into journalism and writing, publishing her first novel in 1982.
She worked as a journalist at The Irish Times during the day and wrote Light a Panny Candle in her spare time.
