Communist Directive Bans 'Lavish Weddings'

The Communist Party in Vietnam's capital, Hanoi, has banned members from holding lavish wedding parties.

Under new rules Luxury venues such as five-star hotels should be avoided, 300 guests can be invited maximum with a single wedding party hosting no more than 600 guests.

The statement issued by the government and signed by Hanoi Party Secretary Pham Quang Nghi is in response state officials and party members, including key leaders at all levels, who organise ostentatious, extravagant, wasteful weddings.

The government wants members to be "examples and pioneers" in ensuring that the wedding ceremony is "thrifty".
