Corruption Probe Launched Into Malaysia Minister's Wedding

An inquiry has been launched in Malaysia over allegations that public funds were poured into the lavish wedding of a top official's son.

Some 130,000 guests enjoyed an 8-hour long celebration in a sports centre in the southern state of Malacca.

The food bill alone cost $200,000.

Malacca's chief minister, Ali Rustam, hit back at claims he could not afford the wedding cost on his salary by saying it was funded by his "own family arrangement".

"[The opposition] should not be jealous of the huge crowd," he told The Star daily newspaper.

"The wedding was my own family arrangement and has nothing to do with the state government."

"We are going item by item, to see how much money was spent and who paid for it," Datuk Mohd Shukri Abdul, deputy head of the Malaysian anti-corruption commission, told Malaysian news agency Bernama.
