Louise Hannon, Co-Chair of Labour LGBT said: "We are pleased the Tánaiste used the occasion of his speech to reaffirm his support for the opening up of civil marriage to same-sex couples. We also welcome the fact that he once again framed the issue in terms of civil rights, and extending full equality to a section of our society who are only too well aware of what it is like to be denied their human rights.
"It is also noteworthy that the Tánaiste's remarks were delivered on the same day as the publication of an opinion poll, which once again confirmed the fact that marriage equality is supported by a strong majority of voters. And crucially, it is backed in every region, gender, age and economic group, a finding that all those involved in the debate should take heed of. Supporting this reform is not divisive or controversial. Instead, a broad spectrum of Irish society see it as an issue of fundamental fairness and respect for same-sex couples and their families."
