Two Year Old 'At Risk' Of Forced Marriage

A two-year-old has been identified as a potential victim of forced marriage, the UK's Forced Marriage Unit has reported.

According to figures reported by the BBC, the child was the youngest among at least 250 children helped by the unit in 2012.

The unit, which is a joint initiative between the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and the Home Office, gave advice or support to 1,485 reported cases last year. Where the cases involved children, 82% were female and 18% were male.

Further figures from the Forced Marriage Unit revealed 114 cases involving individuals with disabilities and 22 cases involving people who described themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.

In Britain, it is not currently illegal to make someone get married against their will, but Prime Minister David Cameron has pledged legislation to stamp out forced marriage and make it a criminal offence in both England and Wales.

With arranged marriages, where those taking part provide their consent, forced marriages can involve kidnapping as well as physical and mental abuse.

Authorities can intervene when they believe there is a risk that children under the age of 18 may become victims of forced marriage, while civil courts also have the power to prevent weddings taking place through Forced Marriage Protection orders.
