Cost Of Divorcing Set To Increase

The cost of a divorce is set to rise next month, according to The Independent, when legal aid is removed for most civil disputes.

As a result, couples who are thinking of parting ways could find it more difficult to do so because of the increasing cost.

In April, £350m is to be cut from the £2.2bn legal aid bill. This means most divorcing couples will now need to seek alternatives to the often lengthy and expensive court process to resolve their finances.

It is understood legal aid will only be available to cases which involve domestic violence or abuse.

The news follows latest figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) which revealed that there are an average of 120,000 divorces annually and 42% of marriages now ending in divorce.

As a result, more and more options are becoming available for couples looking to divorce without breaking the bank, from shops offering their own 'DIY divorce packs' to mediation.
