Ian Simpson saw off competition from players around the world to claim the prize money from the Paddy Power tournament in Dublin earlier this week, the Sunderland Echo has reported.
Mr Simpson, a former teacher at Bedlington High School, was sponsored by Paddy Power to play in the Soul Survivor poker competition. The 26-year-old had played games around the world, including Las Vegas and the Bahamas, before the final was held in Dublin.
When he won the final, he immediately asked his girlfriend of 18 months, Emma Rodham, to marry him. Ms Rodham said she was shocked when her partner dropped down onto one knee after winning the Irish Open poker tournament.
She said: "I knew nothing about it at all. He had taken my best friend and his mum ring shopping, and said he planned to propose whether he lost or won.
"He told all the organisers about it so they knew it would happen. Then he won and he proposed to me straight after, I'm just ecstatic."
Ms Rodham said her fiancé has been playing poker since he was five, but only turned professional last year.
