According to the Shields Gazette, Kerry Eaves proposed to her fiancé Stephen McGow on Valentine's Day last year.
In a "grand gesture", the 41-year-old decided to ask McGow to marry her by hanging a banner with the message, 'Stephen, will you marry me? Love, Kerry', from a footbridge over Newcastle Road in Jarrow.
Now, 14 months later, the couple will marry on Saturday.
The mum-of-two said: "We had spoken about getting married, but it was a bit of a spur-of-the-moment thing.
"I wanted to ask him since it was a leap year. I know you're meant to do it on the last day of February, but I wanted to do it on Valentine's Day."
She added that she started planning her proposal a couple of days before, explaining: "Every morning, he used to pick up a friend to drive to work, but I asked his friend to come and pick him up instead because I didn’t want him to crash when he saw it.
"I was really nervous while I was waiting for him to ring, but I was just over the moon when he said yes."
Mr McGow (45) said: "The van nearly went off the road when I saw it. I just couldn’t believe it. It took me a few days to get over the shock. I think I was just stunned when I saw it. I couldn’t get over it.
"She’s always liked her grand gestures, so it was never going to be something simple."
Following their wedding and reception tomorrow, the couple will head to Turkey for their honeymoon.
