Gavin Smith, 32, used the Metro newspaper's 'Rush-Hour Crush' to propose.
The paper's free feature typically allows readers to write in and announce their commute crushes, and on Friday, Smith - aka 'Tall Rugby Player' -sent in a message for his 33-year-old girlfriend, Rebecca Church.
He said: "I can't imagine my life without you. I love you more every day. Every time we look at each other, I see the other half of me staring back.
"The story of our love is just beginning. Let's write our own ending. Will you marry me?"
Church read the message as she sat next to her boyfriend at Shepherd's Bush station in west London, accepting his proposal when he brought out an engagement ring.
After the proposal, Smith admitted: "I thought something would happen to mess it up. But it went very smoothly and it's amazing she said 'yes'."
The couple - who first met last November when Smith wrote in to 'Rush-Hour Crush' to ask Church out - are set to tie the knot next year.
