IVF Couple Become Parents To Quadruplets

A couple who went through four rounds of IVF have overcome a one in 70 million chance by becoming parents to two sets of identical twins.

According to the Daily Mail, Julian and Sharon Turner married in 2007 and after their attempts to conceive naturally were unsuccessful, the couple turned to IVF treatment.

The first three rounds failed but last year, 36-year-old Sharon fell pregnant with a fourth attempt. The couple, who have spent a total of £40k on IVF, believed they were only having one baby – until they went for their 12-week scan.

When the nurses revealed they were expecting quadruplets, the couple were shocked.

Sharon said: "I just couldn’t believe it. It was like it was a dream. I was over the moon, so happy, but at the same time it didn’t feel like it was happening to me."

However, specialists at John Radcliffe Hospital revealed the difficulty of carrying quadruplets.

She added: "They gave us three options: get rid of all of them, get rid of two of them or keep them. There was no way we could get rid of them. We were happy to let nature take its course."

During a routine check-up last month, doctors discovered Mrs Turner had pre-eclampsia – a dangerous high blood pressure complication – and a low blood platelet count. As a result, the four babies were born by emergency caesarean more than 11 weeks prematurely, with each weighing just over 2lb.

James was first; weighing 2lb 4oz followed by his identical twin Joshua, 2lb 4oz, Lauren, 2lb 6oz and Emily, 2lb 4oz.

The couple expect to be able to take their quads home from the special baby unit at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading within the next few weeks.
