MSP Murdo Fraser, who is the former deputy leader of the Scottish Tories, made the announcement at a Scotland for Marriage meeting, The Courier has said.
The Scotland For Marriage umbrella group is at the forefront of the campaign fighting plans to redefine the current laws for marriage.
Mr Fraser was one of around 30 supporters at the meeting at the Atholl Arms Hotel in Dunkeld.
Fraser, who is now a list MSP for Mid Scotland and Fife, said: "There are few issues which feature so prominently in my constituency mail bag as that of same-sex marriage.
"It is clear there are many local residents who are very concerned about the Scottish Government’s proposals to legalise same-sex marriage, and in particular the impact this might have on religious freedom.
"I was pleased to attend the event at Dunkeld and meet constituents with serious concerns about this. If it is to proceed, it is essential that appropriate safeguards are put in place to ensure that liberties are not adversely affected."
The Scottish Government has insisted no member of the clergy will be forced to perform a gay marriage, but opponents to same-sex marriage have said their concerns go further as equality laws will impact on the civil liberties of all.
