According to the Daily Mail, Portugal-born João Crisóstomo met Vilma Kracun in London, through his then-fiancée in 1971.
Speaking to the New York Times, Crisóstomo said of Kracun: "I found her very attractive, but above all she was a wonderful young lady.
"She radiated joy, and it was a pleasure to be next to her. At the time, I could see she was a good human being and that this was a relationship I would like to nurture. But it was only that — a friendship."
However, despite the couple's good friendship, they lost touch a year later when Mr Crisóstomo moved to New York with his wife.
Crisóstomo, who is now 68, continued to search for his friend, firstly with the help of his wife, who wrote letters to their friend. They were all returned to its senders. They then started asking friends and peers if they knew anything of Ms Kracun, but no information was forthcoming.
Crisóstomo and his wife then divorced in 1997, but he continued the search. It was only on Valentine's Day in 2011, when he actually found 66-year-old Ms Kracun, who was living in Paris at that time.
He had signed up to social networking site Facebook, only making two posts, and it was then when he received a call from his former sister-in-law to say she had discovered Kracun on the site.
It turned out that Ms Kracun had moved to Paris in 1979, where she married and worked as a nurse. Now widowed, she added she was "really very excited" when Mr Crisóstomo's former sister-in-law contacted her.
As a result, Crisóstomo flew to Paris that September and asked his long-lost friend to marry him. After spending the next 18 months in Paris preparing for her retirement, Kracun spoke to her fiancé daily, before she moved to New York in February this year.
Last month, the couple tied the knot in front of 120 guests.
