Knightley tied the knot with Klaxons keyboard player James Righton at the weekend.
The couple married in a small ceremony in the south of France, with only a few guests in attendance.
Righton, 29, is said to have paid £3k for the 100-year-old tree, which he presented to his 28-year-old fiancée on their big day.
It has also been said that the musician had the couple's initials and the date of their wedding carved into the bark of the tree.
A source said: "James had it planted in the back garden of her home in France on the day of the wedding. He had carved their initials in a heart and showed her in front of everyone.
"She collapsed into fits of giggles, it was very sweet."
The insider added: "The ring he gave her was a family heirloom too. He really did think it all through.
"It was an amazing wedding, the whole thing was really sweet and down to earth."
The couple, who began dating in February 2011 and announced their engagement in May last year, are said to be planning a summer break at Knightley's holiday home in Provence.
