The motion was passed on Wednesday with a vote of 12 to 10.
The motion for marriage equality has been proposed by Sinn Fein and they were supported in their proposal by Independent and SDLP councillors.
Councillor John O'Kane abstained from the vote, while the motion was opposed by all the Unionist councillors, while Councillor Bert Johnston also voted against the proposals due to his religious objections to allowing all citizens to marry.
He described the motion as "iniquitous," adding that marriage "was created in Genesis and it's Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve."
While Councillor Debbie Coyle, who led the proposal, said that she knew same sex couples with children and that they were the same as any other children.
Before the vote, a demonstration in support of same-sex marriage took place outside the Town Hall. Last week, the DUP blocked progress on same-sex marriage legislation in the country, having successfully vetoed a motion to legalise it through a 'petition of concern'.
