The survey, which was carried out by MyCelebrityFashion.co.uk, also revealed that while women tend to play down the number of their ex-boyfriends, men will actually increase the number of former partners they dated.
The survey polled 1,362 women aged 18 to 30 and asked what lies they are most prone to telling when in a relationship, and when asked, more than half admitted to lying about their former conquests. The next most common lie, with 38% of the vote, was the reason behind a break up with an ex.
It was also revealed that while most of the lies were told to protect the new partner's ego or feelings, women could still tell fibs in order to protect themselves or place them in a better light.
Looking at other lies women tell their partners, 55% admitted they lie to their partners to make them like them more, with the deceptions including the amount they spend on clothes, their job, financial situation, breast size and weight.
Interestingly, a further 63% agreed that lies tended to lead to arguments in relationships.
Even more interesting, however, was the 55% of women who claimed they would be upset if they were lied to by their partner, while 21% said they would be angry and an unforgiving 13% said that finding out their partner had lied to them would cause them to stop trusting their partner.
Bobbie Malpass, editor of MyCelebrityFashion.co.uk, said: "I am so surprised that the most common thing women lie about is the number of previous partners they’ve had.
"You hear all the time that the key to a healthy relationship is honesty and trust, but clearly people aren’t abiding by that.
"If you don’t want to open up about that sort of thing, just don’t mention it at all!"
The top ten lies women tell their partners are:
1. Number of previous partners (52%)
2. Reason they split with an ex (38%)
3. How much clothes cost (33%)
4. Their job (28%)
5. Financial situation (25%)
6. Age (18%)
7. Cheating (16%)
8. Weight (12%)
9. Size of breasts (9%)
10. Natural hair colour (5%)
