20% Of Brits Keep 'Secret Money Stash' From Partner

A new survey has found more than a fifth of Britons keep a secret stash of money from their partner.

According to Female First, around 22% of women and 20% of men admitted to being less-than-truthful when it came to their money saving arrangements, with men saving more than their female counterparts.

More than five million Brits have admitted they don't know how much their partner earns, while a further six million said they haven't shared their earning details with their partner. Of these figures, two million people admitted to lying to their partner about their earnings – with half fabricating their earnings to make it sound like they earned more, while the other half said they earn less than they actually do.

The study also found that the average amount someone keeps from their partner is just over £6,800.

Interestingly, almost 20% of those who admitted to storing money away said they have saved £10k.

Ian Williams from All About Money, who conducted the research, said: "For most people, relationships are built on trust and openness - and our research shows that this honesty usually extends to our finances too.

"However, there is a minority that don't take that approach. Some people are misleading their partners about how much they earn, or stashing some cash away 'just in case'."
