Gay Marriage Bill 'To Be Introduced Next Month'

The Scottish Government has confirmed it will introduce a bill within the month to legalise same-sex marriage.

A consultation on the proposed Marriage and Civil Partnership (Scotland) Bill closed in March, but the responses have yet to be published.

Minister have promised to change the law to allow same-sex couples to marry, but they have also said they will protect the rights of religious groups who do not wish to carry out such ceremonies. The Government added that the bill would also allow civil ceremonies to take place at a location other than a registrar's office.

The Church of Scotland and the Roman Catholic Church are against the plans to change the definition of marriage.

Alex Neil told MSPs that the bill would be introduced in the current parliamentary sessions. Once the proposal is submitted at parliament, it will be studied by committee members and in the chamber.

The UK government's plans to legalise gay marriage cleared the House of Commons last week.
