According to the AP, Trish Staine, from Minnesota, was training for a half-marathon last weekend when she began to experience back pain.
Ms Staine decided to ignore the pain as she thought she had picked up a training injury. When she woke up the following morning however, the pain was much worse.
The AP quotes Staine as saying: "Monday morning, I woke up and had more back pain, and as the day went on it got worse. I thought I should go to the ER. I thought I ruptured a disc or pulled a muscle."
The 33-year-old, who already has a daughter, decided to continue with her usual day routine, which included watching her husband play basketball and her daughter in a play. It was only when the pain became unbearable, that Staine's husband called for an ambulance.
At the hospital, an examination was carried out and staff revealed to the couple that they could hear a foetal heartbeat. Their daughter was born shortly later.
Staine added that she had no idea she was pregnant, as she hadn't gained any weight or felt any movement. Her husband had also previously had a vasectomy.
"He's still in shock. Everybody is teasing him," she said.
It is believed the couple's new addition was born around five weeks premature.
They named the baby Mira, short for miracle.
