Bitcoin is a decentralised, digital currency and the coins – which were worth $107 each on Tuesday, are kept in an online wallet. The currency was created in 2009, and allows people to buy a number of items.
However, for three months, Austin Craig and Beccy Bingham will attempt to pay rent, buy groceries, dine out and go on a road trip using the currency.
The challenge will begin when the couple return from their honeymoon on 27 July.
Speaking to Deseret News, graphic designer Bingham said: "I'm always up for an adventure, and we're starting off our lives together (so) why not start out doing something different and unique?"
Her 29-year-old husband added: "The idea is to push the outer limits of what's possible with bitcoins. A lot of what this documentary is going to be is us figuring it out and having a camera along with us."
The couple are raising money and bitcoins for the documentary and have made a video on their Kickstarter page explaining their project. On the video, they ask for small businesses and shops who accept bitcoins to make themselves known. Ms Bingham's employer has already agreed to pay her in the currency but paying rent will be one of the couple's hardest challenges.
"We are going to talk to our landlord. We are going to call him up and tell him what we're doing and see if he'll take Bitcoin," she told the paper.
As the couple continue with their journey, they hope to find a car they can buy with bitcoins before hitting the open road. If their project goes well, they even hope to travel to another country where the virtual currency has support.
"It's going to be talking to people, explaining how Bitcoin works, why it's beneficial, and persuading them that we can do this and it will be very painless for you," Craig explained.
