According to the survey, commissioned by MarryAbroad.co.uk found 18% of British couples are now choosing to have an eco-friendly ceremony for their big day.

The study also found that couples who chose to marry abroad are now selecting places in Europe so as the distance travelled is minimised and therefore reducing the carbon footprint.

Guests are also being asked to give charity gifts and/or carbon offsetting as opposed to the traditional wedding list normally compiled by newlywed couples.

Suppliers for weddings was discovered to be one of the largest changes with a quarter of couples opting for local or artisan suppliers over the more mainstream services.

Steph Bishop, Founder of MarryAbroad.co.uk, said: "We studied our overseas wedding enquiries over the past six months, and there definitely have been some new eco-trends so far this year for couples."
