Men 'Can't Fool' Women During Lover's Tiffs

The age-old tactic of agreeing with a woman, in the hopes of avoiding an argument, does not work, according to new research.

The study, which was conducted by researchers from the University of Arizona, looked at the communication styles of 44 heterosexual couples and focused on the differences between the sexes.

Their research concluded that girlfriends and wives were able to discern that their partner's 'Yes, dears' and 'Uh huhs' were insincere, which only resulted in the situation escalating.

Interestingly, an earlier study carried out by Creative Conflict Resolutions in 2011, found that 68% of 900 men polled preferred to say, 'Yes, dear' in an attempt to calm placate their other half.

Neil Warner, who led the research, said as well as being insincere, the passive aggressive behaviour can be confusing.

He explained: "The partner of a passive aggressive person can spend the best 20-30 years of their life trying to decode this maddening double message.

"Meanwhile, in trying to decode it, the innocent partner can be accused of being crazy, aggressive and overly demanding."

To support this view, researchers behind the latest study found that women unconvinced by their partner's response will continue to nag until a "mutually satisfying resolution" is reached.

Ashley Randall, post-doctoral fellow, added: "If you think about a couple that is trying to cooperate with one another, the man might go along and say, 'oh sure, honey, this is great, are we almost done?'

"Whereas the women might say, 'I'm so glad that you're happy, but I just want to talk about this one other thing because I think we're really getting at a resolution.'

"Cooperation is something that's invaluable and instrumental in a successful relationship.

The recent study was published in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships and featured in its podcast series, Relationship Matters.
