The 55-year-old made the revelation in an interview with A Current Affair, on ninemsn news.
She added that the end of her 25-year-old marriage wasn't special, but said it was "only stuff that happens to all of us."
French, who is currently acting as a judge on Australia's Got Talent, did say that they divorce was "tricky" towards the end, but they both acted civilly throughout so they could stay friends.
She explained: I was with Lenny for 30 years, we were married for 25. I would say that 24.5 of those years were great, so nothing to regret there.
"[It was] a bit tricky there at the end, a bit sad, bit of a shame. But the ending of it was a tribute to the way it had always been – with a great kindness and massive respect for each other."
The comedian added that their understanding came because of their daughter.
"Everything that needed to be said was said behind closed doors – loudly and fuelled by alcohol.
"[We] had to empty the knapsack out so both of us can start again in a good way and support each other even through the next bit.
"We started as friends and that's how we finished it."
In April, French tied the knot with Mark Bignell after two years of dating. The couple met through Dawn's mum, Roma, who founded charity Hamoaze House with Mark.
