According to NPD Group, $1.8bn was spent on small appliances as gifts between June 2012 and May 2013, with $112m of those sales accounting for presents for brides-to-be.
It also revealed that the top five wedding-related gifts are electric knives, espresso makers, stand mixers, waffle makers and garment steamers.
In addition, the study found that people spend 39% more on wedding-related small appliance gifts, than on presents for other occasions.
Debra Mednick, Executive Director of the NPD Group, said that "the holiday season accounts for more than half of the annual small appliance sales", but added that "weddings present a unique opportunity for recipients to request premium products at a special time in their lives when friends and families are likely to splurge on presents, regardless of available promotions."
While shopping online is more convenient for many, the study revealed it also makes us spend more, with the average price of a small appliance wedding gift purchased online being 14% higher than if one was bought in a store.
