Mums Feel Guilty Going Back To Work

A new study has found a majority of working mums feel guilty leaving their child at home as they return to work.

The study, carried out by Mother and Baby magazine, found that 60% of mums feel guilty leaving their child at home, and while women do like the financial and emotional independence work provides, 80% said they are won over by spending time with their new born, and have more maternity leave than they originally planned.

However, for almost nine in 10 mothers, the option of not returning to work is no longer an option as a majority said they needed to return in order to keep money coming into the house.

A majority also said no to the recent government proposal of sharing maternity leave equally with their partner due to financial concerns. Many felt it would be beneficial if their partner spent more time with their baby, but confessed it wasn't possible until equal pay is implemented.

When women do return to work following maternity leave, 80% said they felt supported by their colleagues, with most adding that the company gave them flexible or part-time working hours.

Claire Irvin, Editor-in-Chief of Mother & Baby Magazine, said: "Getting the work life balance is tough. Our survey shows us that modern mums are taking control by going out to work and ensuring they sort out the hours and the times that suit them and their childcare arrangement, but despite their achievements they are struggling with an overwhelming feeling of guilt, leaving their children behind to be cared for by others and a feeling that they are missing out on precious time with their family.

"More women than ever before have an almost super-human ability to juggle work and family life, but it can be difficult, particularly on an emotional level."
