Parents Now Help Pay For Their Son's Wedding

There has been a long tradition of parents helping to meet costs towards their daughter's wedding day, however a new study has revealed that parents are now also helping to pay for their son's big day.

The survey, which was carried out by Saga Home Insurance, found that weddings are now becoming so expensive, that a fifth of parents plan to pay for their son's wedding. Many more claim they will make some contribution to the big day.

It was also revealed that a third of parents pay for their daughter's wedding day.

The findings revealed that the average cost of a wedding increased to more than £21,000 this year, with previous studies showing it had jumped by £7,000 in a decade.

In 2003, the cost for a couple's big day was £14,643; this rose to £18,781 in 2006 and £19,265 in 2009.

However, as many of the newlyweds in their 20s and 30s are unable to meet the soaring costs, they turn to their parents to help them achieve their dream wedding.

Elsewhere, the survey revealed that parents are more likely to cover the entire bill for their children if they didn't have to pay for their own.

Emma Soames, editor-at-large for Saga Magazine, said: "The only way to give your child the wedding of their dreams is for both sets of parents to contribute.

"I have discovered this as my own daughter is getting married this summer and it seems to be the norm these days for the parents in law to contribute.

"Costs can be enormous especially since a girl's implacable desire to dance in her wedding dress means that there is normally a celebratory meal for quite large numbers of people before they hit the dance floor."
