Mum-To-Be Gives Birth At Baby Shower

A mother-to-be received a surprise gift at her recent baby shower – after she went into labour two weeks early.

According to the Daily Mail, Anna Smith, 33, was enjoying a baby shower hosted by her friends and her husband of two years, Aly, when she started to experience stomach cramps. Ignoring the pain, she thought it was nothing important, however shortly after the guests started to arrive on Saturday, Anna was in labour.

Her friends, Vicky Hook and Helen Rimmer as well as her brother's partner Emma Booth, acted as midwives for the birth as they waited for an ambulance to arrive.

Speaking about the unexpected delivery, Mrs Smith said: "When I'd first started having stomach pains, a few of us were joking saying 'Oh, haha, what if the baby came today?'

"But I never thought in a million years it would come true. I can't really remember much of it, but I remember Emma saying 'The baby's coming'.

"I was shocked at how quick it all was - it was all very surreal. Vicky and Helen have been friends for years and we've been through so much together.

"First they were my bridesmaids and then they were my midwives."

The baby shower was taking place at Anna and Aly's home in Hedon, Hull, on Saturday afternoon. Shortly after Anna started to feel pains in her stomach she went upstairs; when she didn't return for a while her friends went to check and make sure she was okay. She was having contractions every six minutes when they found her, but when her friends contacted the hospital around 3.30pm they were told to come in when the contractions were every three minutes.

In the end, however, there wasn't enough time as baby Martha as born at 4.10pm.

When the first responder arrived a few minutes later, Martha was snuggled up on her mum's chest, surrounded by her family.

Both Anna and Martha were then taken by ambulance to the Women and Children's Hospital at Hull Royal Infirmary, where they stayed until Monday afternoon and have now returned home.
