Same-Sex Marriage Becomes UK Law

Same-sex couples in England and Wales will be able to marry after amendments became law.

The controversial legislation – the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill – received Royal Assent today (17 July).

The changes were supported by Conservative, Labour and Lib Dem leaderships, but it also faces severe opposition from Conservative MPs as well as a number of religious institutions.

Under the changes of the Bill, religious organisations will have to "opt in" to offering gay weddings, but the Church of England and the Church in Wales are banned from doing so.

Commons Speaker John Bercow confirmed the Bill had received Royal Assent which is the formal approval of the sovereign required for all legislation.

On Tuesday, the proposals were approved by MPs and peers.

It is now expected that the first same-sex ceremonies will take place by summer 2014.
