Dating Scams Are On The Increase

New figures released show that dating scams have increased significantly in the past year.

According to the report, released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the sudden surge has assisted in pushing fraud cases up by 27% over the past year.

The sudden jump has seen experts issue a warning that more criminals are turning to the websites to 'spark romances' with strangers before asking them for money.

The figures were released as part of the ONS report on crime figures.

Of the 229,000 frauds recorded in the last year, 1,212 accounted for online dating scams.

John Flatley, from the ONS, said: "The figures are showing that this is a new area of crime that is on the rise.

"It is difficult to determine how much that is due to an increase in the prevalence of crime or an increase in publicity for Action Fraud."
