House Of Commons Available For Weddings

House Of Commons Available For Weddings

The Palace of Westminster is set to open its doors to the public after it was agreed to use the venue for weddings and parties.

According to a report in the Daily Mail, more than a dozen rooms will be used various functions including birthdays and wedding receptions.

The plans were finalised at a meeting of the Commons Administration Committee.

The announcement comes after Commons Speaker, John Bercow, warned that the building should not be a "private club", but rather one of "public property".

It is understood the move to allow functions to be held at the House of Commons will help raise funds for the upkeep of the building, therefore allowing it to be made more available to the public in general.

At the moment, a majority of the rooms are only available to MPs. The rooms can be used for events organised by external organisations, but they are not allowed to be used to make a profit for the businesses involved.

The Commons will offer the venue initially on a two-year experimental scheme when it will be intended for the public to use the rooms and not its members.

Around 15 rooms are thought to be included in the project – including two bars – but the Commons Chamber will not be available for any parties.

The members’ dining room and Jubilee Room already have licenses for weddings, so it will now be possible for couples to have both their ceremony and reception at the venue.

There are plans to introduce price lists in the autumn.
