OED Could Change 'Marriage' Entry

Language experts at the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) has said the definition of the word 'marriage' will be changed.

The decision comes after legislation that allows same-sex couples to marry was passed earlier this month.

It added that while the definition of marriage did not change overnight, they will monitor how the word continues to change over the next year.

A spokeswoman for Oxford University Press is quoted by the Daily Mail as saying: "We continually monitor the words in our dictionaries, paying particular to those words whose usage is shifting, so yes, this will happen with marriage."

Currently, marriage is defined as being a "formal union of a man and a woman, typically as recognised by law, by which they become husband and wife."

On July 17, the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill received Royal Assent, despite receiving strong opposition from Tory MPs and a number of religious institutions.

Speaking to Gay Star News, a spokeswoman for Oxford University Press said: "We are constantly monitoring usage in this area in order to consider what revisions and updates we may need to make.

"It's worth pointing out that, as the OED is distinct from other dictionaries in being a historical record of the language, meanings of the past will remain, even while language changes and new ones are added."
