The study, which was conducted by the University of Minnesota, found women tend to purchase expensive items of clothing, not to garner a romantic interest, but rather to ward off any potential rivals for their man's affections.
The results suggest that showing off designer items gives off a vibe that the woman has a devoted partner. In turn, this prevents other women from trying to steal him.
It also revealed that women are quick to assume a woman's designer bag was purchased by her boyfriend or husband, even if she bought it herself.

"It might seem irrational that each year Americans spend over $250billion on women's luxury products. . . but conspicuous consumption is actually smart for women who want to protect their relationship."
Almost 650 women took part in the study which looked at their shopping habits. It was revealed that when a woman feels her romantic relationship is being threatened, she will often turn to designer labels, but not always for a 'pick-me-up'.
