The study, which was carried out by E cigarette company, Neo, for National Fresh Breath Day, revealed that 67% of people felt bad breath was the biggest turn off on a date.
This was followed by 59% who thought talking about an ex-partner was a 'no no'.
According to 48% of those polled, a date being rude was also another popular reason for the night ending early, while a further 38% said flatulence was a turn off.
Of the women who took part, 87% said they would not go on another date with a man if he had bad breath, while only 33% of men said the same about their counterparts.
It has been claimed that Britons going on that first date, will brush their teeth on average, three times. This 'routine' even comes before their appearance and what they are going to wear for an all-important date.
Once a relationship moves past the initial stages however, people do not appear to be as fussed, as respondents were found to be more forgiving if their partner's oral hygiene declined slightly.
Neo Director Estée Oren said: "It's clear from the research that bad breath or the fear of bad breath holds people back in all areas of their life, from romantic relationships to friendships and in their work.
"Given the survey results, halitosis appears to be the single biggest thing that can hold you back in your love life. From those asked it's clear that for the overwhelming majority of people they can have the perfect first date with sparkling conversation and chemistry, but if he leans in for a goodnight kiss and they are met by a wall of bad breath it's unlikely there will be a second date."
