According to the Daily Mail, Heath Joynson was claiming benefits after telling Stoke-on-Trent City Council that he was single and living alone.
However, a photograph of him signing a marriage register with his partner emerged on Facebook – where the Council later discovered it. It was then revealed that Mr Joynson, who was receiving housing and council tax payments, was found to be living with his wife, who had a job.
North Staffordshire Magistrates heard Joynson had falsely claimed benefits totalling £1,241. He first started claiming benefits in May 2010, but did not notify the council when he married and began living with his wife.
Following the local council's discovery of the photograph on Joynson's wifes' page, they invited him to three meetings. He did not attend.
Lionel Desa, prosecuting, said: "Her Facebook profile showed them signing a marriage register. Her profile also showed she was employed."
Mr Joynson pleaded guilty to failing to notify a change of circumstances affecting his entitlement to benefits between 20 September 20 2010 and 9 January 2011. He also admitted to stealing £519.87 worth of goods from two supermarkets, failing to surrender to bail, and failing to attend a follow-up assessment following a test for the presence of a class A drug.
He was sentenced to a 12-month community order with supervision, a six-month drug rehabilitation requirement and 120 hours of unpaid work.
A council spokesman is quoted as saying: "The offender tried a host of tricks and lies to avoid his responsibilities.
"But our determined investigation team found pictures of his marriage ceremony on his wife's Facebook page. Now he is paying the price of deception and we are sending out a strong message that we will piece together information from a range of sources and expose people who are defrauding the public purse."
During the hearing, the court was informed that Joynson's wife left him five months ago because he had started taking heroin.
