This is followed by their smile, and then their breasts, according to the survey by Murine eye drops.
The routine was discovered following a detailed study into men's first impressions of a woman they meet for the first time, or who they pass in the street – and vice versa.
Interestingly, the results reveal that the long-held stereotype of men's eyes being drawn to a woman's breasts upon first sight isn't necessarily true.
Of the 1,000 men who participated in the survey, around 70% admitted a woman's eyes are the first thing they look at. A woman's smile came in second on the list, while breasts were third. Rounding out the top five, was hair and perhaps, controversially, weight. Following that routine, men's eyes are drawn to a woman's legs, dress sense, bottom, height and skin condition.
When it comes to the women, they also opted for an eyes-first approach when forming a first impression of a man. This is followed by a man's smile, height and dress sense.
Elsewhere in the study, it was revealed that one in four men have been caught looking at another woman by their other half, while 17% of women admitted they had walked by their intended destination and had been forced to turn around and walk back after spotting a good-looking man.
Two thirds of men claimed they are confident enough to tell a stranger they have a specific nice feature, while one in two women said the same.
One in five men admitted they had walked into another person when they spotted someone of the opposite sex, while an embarrassed one in 10 have walked into a lamp post as they've watched an attractive women walk by.
In the celebrity world, men said Cheryl Cole had the most attractive eyes, while women voted for George Clooney.
A spokesperson for Murine eye drops said: "Eyes usually tell us a lot about a person so we aren't surprised that eyes are what draws us to the opposite sex.
"Until you get to talk to a person for the first time, all you have to go on is the way they look, a simple smile is also something that both genders notice in each other.
"It goes to show that men and women are more alike than many would previously had thought.
"This study almost crushes the common stereotype that the first thing men look at is a woman's chest, however it came third on the list so it's not quite a changed habit.
"Getting attention from the opposite sex boosts your confidence so using your eyes and smile in positive ways really gives you a good chance of getting welcomed attention, even if it's innocent."
