UK Singletons Help Boost Economy

A new study has found that single people help contribute £3.6bn to the UK economy each year as they continue on their quest for true love.

The poll, which was carried out by dating website match.com, found that the average dater spends around £281 each year on clothes, cosmetics and beauty as they prepare for a date. However, it is the spend on entertainment – such as bars and restaurants – which is the highest, reaching a total of £2.1bn in 2013. Dating singletons were found to spend around an average of £29.40 each in restaurants, with an average £18.86 in bars and pubs.

Counting the costs, researchers found that with almost 37 million dates taking place each year, the average couple spends £103 on each date.

Looking at the wider economic picture, the transport industry receives a boost of £297m each year, while fashion retailers and beauty salons receive an injection of £900m.

Daniel Solomon, Centre for Economics and Business Research economist and main author of the report, explained: "With just over three million active daters in the UK, there is no denying that their activity has a noticeable economic impact.

"Dating makes an essential contribution to the high street, directly helping a range of industries like retail, food and drink and entertainment."

Karl Gregory, MD UK & Ireland of match.com, added that bars and pubs appear to remain the most popular places for people to date.
