False Divorce Papers Used In Sham Wedding

A woman accused of participating in a 'sham wedding' reportedly produced a false divorce certificate for the ceremony, Belfast High Court has been told.

According to the BBC, 29-year-old Lynda Eremion, who is from Nigeria, and the British citizen she was due to marry were arrested on 28 August when immigration enforcements officers stopped their ceremony.

At court, the prosecution said registry officials at Belfast City Hall had noted inconsistencies in the accounts given by the couple in the run up to their wedding.

A barrister claimed a decree absolute document that Ms Eremion had produced to confirm she was divorced was found to be false. In addition, although the accused first claimed to live with her husband-to-be at Heatherbell Street in east Belfast, prosecution said she later gave an address in Tates Avenue, south of the city. There were also concerns regarding the woman's young son.

The prosecution barrister added: "She has shown an intent to deceive the authorities by engaging in this sham marriage so she can remain in this country with her child."

During the hearing, it was also revealed Ms Eremion arrived in the UK on a visa to study at the University of Glamorgan in Wales, but she left the course without completing it.

The defence has said Ms Eremion denies a charge of seeking to obtain leave to remain in the UK by deceptive means. Her lawyer also spoke of the potential impact on his client's three-year-old son if she remained in custody until the case goes to trial.

Eremion's bail application was adjourned, with the judge requesting more details from social services as well as a possible bail address.
