Women Refuse To Marry In 'Unlucky' 2013

Wedding industry experts have said 2014 is already "inundated" with wedding requests – because brides are unwilling to marry in "unlucky" 2013.

They added that a surprising number of couples are choosing to postpone their big day due to a fear of the supposedly unlucky number 13.

Speaking to Forbes, retailer Men's Warehouse said its sales have fallen 10% on 2012 levels because of the reduction in the number of tuxedo rentals. They have attributed it to peoples' superstitions.

CEO Doug Ewert explained: "Historically, we've seen numeric anomalies in the calendar effect when brides choose their wedding date, and we believe that the number 13 in 2013 is causing a small but meaningful number of brides to avoid getting married."

Confirming the trend to CBC News, wedding officiate Dr Alan Viau said he usually witnesses around 100 weddings each year, but for 2013, he is around 30% short of that number.

"Marriage is about love and hope, and people want to get everything on their side for their best hope for the future.

"If it involves [thinking] 'Maybe we shouldn't have it on the 13th,' that's what they're going to do."

According to Forbes, the wedding industry itself does not expect the sector to be affected by the slump, with many retailers expecting a strong year of sales.
