The study, which was carried out by Lovestruck.com, found that while women make a real effort with their appearance, sometimes, they can get it wrong.
For example, 76% of men said they hated UGG boots, while 52% said they are unoriginal for a date. Harem pants was another item of clothing labelled as a 'no no' for a first date, with 33% of men saying they should be renamed as "nappy trousers".
A further 45% of men said gladiator sandals and pumps do not accentuate a woman's legs if worn with a skirt, but 46% felt they were more acceptable with trousers or jeans.
Elsewhere, 67% said dungarees do absolutely nothing for a woman's figure, instead hiding the curves, while 55% even went as far as to say the item of clothing should be banned.
"Why would women want to hide their face and eyes under a pair of sunglasses that makes them look like 'the fly'?" was the answer given by a majority of men on oversized sunnies, but 57% agreed that celebrities also look equally as ridiculous in them.
When it comes to make-up, 56% of Lovestruck men said they hated dark fake tan, with 49% saying it made a woman look "cheap", with 34% saying it is a direct link to intelligence – that is, the more fake tan a woman uses, the lower her IQ.
55% said that au natural and a fresh glow to your skin is the most attractive. Finally, 77% of men surveyed admitted they hated the heavy "wearing a spider on your eyes" look, with 71%, favouring a more natural look.
Interestingly, when women were surveyed, 47% said that they would not take on board the men's opinions and would wear what they wanted to on a date if it means they are comfortable. A further 59% argued that their potential date should be accepting them for the things that they like as well as those they don't.
