The research, which was carried out by Illicit Encounters, found that 8% of married women had enjoyed dating a younger man. It was also revealed that the most common age gap between cougars and their lovers is five to 10 years.

However, it's not just the women getting in on the trend, as 57% of the married men polled admitted to having an extra-marital affair with a woman older than themselves. A further 24% of married men said they had chosen to date a women between five and 10 years older than themselves.

According to the figures, men who like older women are typically found to date women who are between three and five years older.

A spokesperson for Illicit Encounters said: "Since the release of the first Bridget Jones book, the internet has launched a sexual revolution - enabling people to rediscover passion and romance - including more than six per cent of the UK's married population signing up to our site.

"The fact is, a woman's sexual appetite increases with age, whereas men's tends to peak in their mid-twenties. This could go some way to explaining the growing trend of Cougars."
