A source is quoted by Britain's Grazia magazine as saying the couple will have the ceremony at their home in France.
The insider claims: "They love the idea of a Christmas wedding at their French home, Château Miraval, with a big roaring fire and lots of festive decorations."
It is thought the couple will tie the knot now that Jolie, 38, has recovered from her double mastectomy, and before she has a second operation next year to reduce her risk of ovarian cancer.
It is understood the couple cannot legally marry in France, so they have decided to hold the formal ceremony in Hawaii, which was a special location for Jolie's late mother, Marcheline Bertrand.
A source explained: "It means that her mother can be a part of the small ceremony on her favourite beach.
"Then the main event will be a wintery-themed bash in France with all of their closest friends and family.
"Everyone, especially the children, is very excited."
The Hollywood couple have been engaged for 18 months and have six children. They adopted Maddox, Zahara and Pax together and have three biological children; Shiloh and twins Knox and Vivienne.
Pitt was previously married to Jennifer Aniston, while Jolie has been married twice before; firstly to Jonny Lee Miller, and then Billy Bob Thornton.
