The singer added that starting a family with his husband David Furnish has been more rewarding that all his hit records have been.
Speaking to Britain's GQ magazine, the 66-year-old revealed: "I have never been happier than now, with David and our two wonderful sons."
The couple are fathers to two-year-old Zachary and eight-month-old Elijah, who were born via the same surrogate mother.
Elsewhere in the interview, Elton replied that having a family was the most poignant experience of his life, saying every man – before he dies – should witness the birth of a child.
Elton and Furnish began dating in 1993 and were on of the first couples in the UK to enter into a civil partnership when the legislation came into effect in December 2005. Their extravagant ceremony was held in the Windsor Guildhall.
Last month, the singer revealed on The Ellen DeGeneres Show that he planned to marry Furnish once the equal marriage bill has passed.
When asked if he had plans to marry, he replied: "Absolutely, we're going to get married. We had our civil partnership on the first day it was legally possible.
"Same-sex people have been waiting a long time for things to happen to them.
"I've been through hell [throughout] my 50s and 60s and even before then, so when a government gives you this legislation, which is so wonderful and we didn't expect it to come so soon in society, then you seize it by the horns and you say, 'Yes, we're gonna do this because it's such a gift and we never thought we'd have it'."
