The survey, which was carried out by comparejewellery.com, found that men preparing to propose to their second wife spend £1,200 more on an engagement as they are said to have more faith in the relationship's stability.
Of those men, a staggering 92% pay for the ring themselves, with 7% saying their split the cost with their fiancée.
The study also discovered that the average cost of a ring – for the first marriage – cost £821, but then leaped to £2,050 for the second marriage. For a third marriage, even more money was splashed out on a diamond with £3,003 spent.
When men were asked why they spent more on a ring the second time around, 48% said the money was worth it because they had more faith in the security of their relationship. A further 38% admitted it was because they were more wealthy. For 17% of men however, they confessed they hadn't intended to spend so much on a ring, but had been caught out by the expensive tastes of their wife-to-be.
And when it comes to choosing the ring, almost half ask their fiancée to choose the ring, while 8% said they had "recycled" their first wife's engagement ring.
Ali O'Neill, Head of Product at comparejewellery.com, said: "To see that the expenditure rises by around £1,000 per marriage was surprising but understandable given the social context in which second and third marriages usually come about – later in life, when your disposable income will often have increased.
"What was interesting was the idea that men spend more when they have more faith in the marriage, and consider second marriages to be more worthy of spending a little extra.
"Whatever the reason, our results show that quite often women really are second time lucky."
